Click Here to Download Acrobat Reader

The USFWS frequently distributes digital documents and other information to the public via its websites. To facilitate this in the broadest manner possible, documents are often provided in PDF format. PDF is a digital document solution developed by Adobe Systems Incorporated.

How can I open PDF files?

To open, view and print PDF files, you will need to download and install Adobe's Acrobat PDF Reader, which is freely available and can be downloaded from here.

Adobe has two different versions of their free reader available. A smaller sized, but more limited version can be downloaded by dial-users (9MB file). A full version of the reader is available for those with broadband connections (15MB file).

It is highly recommended to download the files to your computer for viewing purposes. To do this, right click on the PDF file and select "Save Target As" or "Save Link As". Then open the file on your computer.

What version of Acrobat should I use?

Acrobat Reader version 7.0 is the current release (as of 1/10/06). Older versions will typically still open documents created with newer versions, but it is recommended to update to the most current release.

When you download the reader from Acrobat, be certain to specify the operating system in use on your computer.

What is PDF and why is it used here?

PDF, or Portable Document Format, is a proprietary system (developed by Adobe) for exchanging electronic documents. The benefits of this format are extensive and include the ability to compress large documents, maintain document print standards and allow for document security. Likewise Acrobat Reader (Adobe's free utility for reading PFD files) allows the user to easily print PDF files at any size convenient to the user.
